COMPETITION RULES

1. During each season of the Society there will be a number of league competitions, typically 4, when members' work will be judged and awarded a mark out of 20.

2. The competitions are divided into two main sections: Prints and Slides.

3. “Panel of en-prints” competition(s) may also be held during the year, these will not contribute to the league scores.

4. Monochrome prints entered in the print league competition will also be eligible for entry into a separate monochrome print league competition held in parallel to the normal competition.

5. To allow subsequent entry of monochrome prints into the Five Towns Competition, monochrome prints should comply with the current rules of the Five Town Competition (available from the Competition Secretary).

6. Entry into competitions is restricted to fully paid up members of the Society.

7. Prints and slides previously accepted for a league competition or near duplicates shall be ineligible in the same class. Entries produced by more selective enlargement, alternative trim or masking and pictures taken from a similar viewpoint will be deemed to be near duplicates.

8. The photographer must have taken the images submitted.

9. The maximum entry in each competition is three pictures per member per section (i.e. three slides and/or three prints). All entries shall be handed to the competition secretary by the required date, which is normally one clear week before the competition night.

If entries reach a level where it is impractical to view/judge them in an evening, then at the Competition Secretaries discretion the maximum may be reduced to 2.

10.  Presentation of Entries

a) Slides to be mounted between glass and in suitable mounts (such as Gepe), spotted titled and identified by the competition number, which is given to each member and the title. The spot to be in the bottom left hand comer when the slide is viewed normally in the hand, marking with an indelible coloured pen is preferred. Improperly mounted slides, or slides which are considered liable to jam or damage the projector will be withheld from the competition. Only 2" x 2" slide mounts are acceptable.

b) Prints must be mounted on card and identified with the title, and the competition number on the back. The minimum size of print acceptable is 8" x 6" (exclusive of mount) with a maximum print size of 20" x 16" (inclusive of mount).

11. Prints and slides for entry in all classes of the Society's competitions may be home or trade processed and taken with digital or traditional photographic techniques.

12. Entries in the “Panel of En-prints” competitions should consist of five 6” x 4” prints mounted on a 20” x 16” card.

13. The Committee reserves the right to reject any image if they consider it unsuitable for display in the club competitions.

14. League Competition Awards

For each section, for each entrant in the league competitions, the best mark from each of the competitions will be totalled.

Prints – The Newfield International Trophy

The competitor with the highest aggregate mark in the prints section is the winner for the year and will be awarded the trophy at the Annual Dinner. Runners up will receive certificates. In the event of a tie, the total for all the second best entries of each tied entrants will be added to the their total to resolve the winner. The tie will stand if this procedure fails to produce a clear winner.

Slides – The Founders Trophy

The winner will be decided using the same process as used for the prints.

Awards will be made only to members who have entered at least three competitions.

The following additional trophies will be awarded each year.

The Eddie Dickinson Trophy is awarded to the worker with the highest mark (total of all league competitions) in any class or section. Again, in the event of a tie the best second entry will be added etc., as described above.

A competition to select the best print or slide will take place after completion of the league competitions. The award is presented for slides/prints on alternative years.

The Peter Frost Trophy is awarded to the worker with the highest marks in both prints and slides.

The Monochrome Print Trophy will be awarded for the monochrome competition.
